Coach of FPS Junior Varsity Team

Portrayed by Cynthia Watros
Mary Matrix is Jenny Matrix's win-at-all-costs mother, former captain of the Denver Commandos, and the current coach of the VGHS Varsity team.

OverviewEdit

"So you lost your star player, big woop. You know what's better than having a star player? A star coach. That's me."
— Mary Matrix, at the first lesson of FPS 101.

Season 1Edit

Season 2Edit

PersonalityEdit

As of Episode 3, Mary Matrix is a no-nonsense coach. In spite of this, she can be quite condescending and if not, feel superior to to others. This can be seen as (in Jenny's words) she just 'waltzed' back into Jenny's life while the older Matrix saying she could simply because she was her mother.

She always shows a strong competitive vigor, discounts others emotions, does not smoothly navigate social situations and as a consequence comes across as emotionally distant.

Objective oriented Mary Matrix lives objectively in every sense. Most perceive her as icy and rightly so. Throughout the series, many characters are disregarded by Matrix. Appearances and measurable accomplishments matter most to her leaving little room for intimacy or compassion.

In Season 2 Three Laps, Three Rounds, Three words Mary calls a meeting with Jenny wherein they discuss strategy for an upcoming competitive game. During this exchange Jenny brings up Brian, asking for her mothers approval despite dating him secretly. However Mary stands firm in the no romance rule established in episode Double XP Weekend, benching both Jenny and Brian. Jenny vents about the absence of her mothers presence in her life and walks away. Visibly affected, (Mary) Matrix shows a mournful expression possibly hinting at future moments of bonding and reconciliation between the two.

RelationshipsEdit

Jenny MatrixEdit

Although a family, Jenny and her mother appear estranged from each other. This is implied during season 2, but not until Episode 3 wherein Jenny quickly becomes angered with her mother after being told to write a speech to represent her mother to win an award. Jenny has trouble with writing the speech, and although Mary wins the award, Jenny seems to be depressed. Subsequent to delivering said speech genuinely, before taking the podium, Mary accepts her daughters gesture for a hug leaning in to say "was that so hard," in a sardonic tone. Later on in Series 3 Jenny has a fight with her mother saying bad things to her.
